Archbishop Donald Wuerl is one of two Americans among the 24 cardinals who will be installed this weekend.
The group includes the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt; the Archbishop of Warsaw; and the Archbishop of Columba, Sri Lanka.
The most prominent task of the College of Cardinals is voting in papal elections.
This weekend's events in Rome bring the number of voting cardinals to 203. Sixty have been named by Pope Benedict XVI. Eighty-two cardinals are older than 80 and ineligible to vote in papal elections.
Wuerl brings to six the number cardinals leading archdioceses in the United States. Four American cardinals work in Rome, and another eight U.S. cardinals are retired.

The Rev. Donald Breier rushed to pack yesterday before celebrating Mass and heading to the airport.
Breier, 67, rector at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland and cousin of Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, was heading to Rome for a two-day ceremony tomorrow and Sunday at the Vatican during which Wuerl will be elevated to cardinal.
"I really don't quite know what to expect this weekend," said Breier, who is among the estimated 400 people from Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh expected to attend the ceremony. "I just have never seen anything like this."
Wuerl, 70, grew up in Mt. Washington and was bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh for 18 years before being named archbishop of Washington in 2006. Pope Benedict XVI announced his selection of Wuerl to the College of Cardinals on Oct. 20.
Among those heading to Rome are Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik, one-time secretary to Wuerl who has known him for 23 years; Wuerl's two brothers; and countless priests and friends. Even Steelers Chairman Emeritus Dan Rooney, the U.S. ambassador to Ireland, will attend the ceremony.
"It will be an awesome experience," said Zubik, who talks to Wuerl several times a month. "What is so special is that the church recognizes his special gifts."
Breier grew up in Mt. Oliver and attended Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati with Wuerl five decades ago. Their family has produced priests in each of the past four generations.
"He is probably one of the smartest people I have known. He has true intelligence and common sense," Breier said. "He wants to build bridges, and knows that most prejudice and bigotry is based on ignorance."
Wuerl's appointment as a cardinal was not a surprise, said Thomas J. Reese, a Jesuit priest and senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University and author of "Archbishop: Inside the Power Structure of the American Catholic Church."
"He has been very well liked in the Vatican," Reese said. "He is very smart and takes the teaching role of the bishops seriously. He is no liberal, but he does not like confrontation, and has no interest in things like denying communion to pro-choice politicians or threatening people with excommunication."
Wuerl spent a decade in Rome and was one of was one of three non-cardinals permitted inside the 1978 conclave that selected Karol Wojtyla as Pope John Paul II.
His reputation and role as a bridge-builder will be important in an increasingly conservative U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said John Allen, who covers the Vatican for the National Catholic Reporter.
"He's one of the few liked and trusted, by both the conservatives and the more liberal social justice group, among the bishops," Allen said. "Wuerl is a consummate churchman -- loyal and very much a team player. Inside the bishops' conference, he's seen as a moderate. Wherever Wuerl is, there's the center of the conference.

The prez sure has been giving a lot of love to Pittsburgh lately. He announced he'll hold the next G-20 summit in the Steel City, entertained the Pittsburgh Steelers at the White House (he divulged to the Super Bowl champs that he has a "terrible towel," the black-and-gold rag fans wave in the air), and even invited the owners of local fave Pamela's to help make Memorial Day breakfast.
Why bring in out-of-towners to do the job? One word: pancakes.
The president loved Pamela's unique, crepelike pancakes when he wolfed down a platter while campaigning for the Pennsylvania primary. So when the White House needed to make a top-notch breakfast for families who have lost a loved one at war, it was Pittsburgher Gail Klingensmith of Pamela's P&G Diners who got the call.
"I thought it was a joke, everybody thought it was a joke, and it wasn't a joke," Klingensmith tells Whispers.
She and co-owner Pamela Cohen were in a frenzy at the prospect, but they quickly began making arrangements to get themselves and their secret ingredients to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
When the pancake supplies arrived, Klingensmith received a text message from White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford: "The Eagle Has Landed."
And pancakes are just the beginning.
There has been a lot of talk about the Obamas bringing all sorts of culinary talents into their kitchen.
Most who have prepared food so far have been big names. Spike Mendelsohn of Top Chef fame and Spanish chef José Andrés cooked outside at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. Art Smith, Oprah's former chef who now operates Art and Soul in Washington, was there for Easter, too. And we hear that he returned to the White House recently to whip up a lunch.

The Lemmon family has spent a lot of time in the hospital.
Adison, 6, has aniridia, a genetic eye condition, and is legally blind. Her brother, Nathan, 5, has Asperger's syndrome. The children and their mother, Stacy, come to Excela Health Latrobe Hospital for regular tests and occupational therapy -- visits that can include long, stressful waits.
To help the children cope, Stacy has always brought activity bags stuffed with toys and puzzles. When sitting still became too hard, the family walked the hallways, as Stacy tried to engage the children with guessing games.
"A lot of I Spy -- that was our favorite game," Stacy Lemmon said. "But it was challenging."
Their next appointment in December will be different. Now the children can wait in Austin's Playroom, a gift from the Mario Lemieux Foundation that opened on the hospital's ground floor Thursday afternoon.
The room, with wooden floors and a variety of child-sized furniture, is stocked with board games, plastic dinosaurs and colorful blocks, along with a flat-screen TV, an XBox system and cartoons on DVDs.
"That will make life a little easier," Stacy Lemmon said.
The playroom is named for Austin Lemieux, the son of Penguins owner Mario Lemieux. Now 14 and healthy, Austin was born prematurely and spent the first 71 days of his life in a neonatal intensive care unit. During those long weeks, his mother, Nathalie, found no suitable place for his older sisters to play.
"She decided we've got to do something," said Nancy Angus, executive director of the Lemieux Foundation. "Coming to a hospital can be scary, but if you come to a room like this, it's a little less."
This is the 21st Austin's Playroom, Angus said, and the first in Westmoreland County. Each features a similar assortment of toys, including a sand table with four leaf-shaped wooden chairs. The table is a favorite of Austin, who looks for it whenever the foundation opens a playroom.
After a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday, the quiet teenager, who was accompanied by his mother, Nathalie, watched from an adult-sized chair as a gaggle of 4-year-olds from Seton Hill's preschool program inaugurated the playroom.
"My turn!" a girl squealed, angling for a position at the sand table.
"Woo! Woo!" shouted a small boy, as he piloted a toy car through the sand.
Adison, in her pink coat and pigtails, placed her white cane to the side and worked on an oversized puzzle. She said she was looking forward to playing in Austin's Playroom the next time she has to come to the hospital for tests.
"You can come in and play a little bit," Adison said. "It gets it off your mind. Then when you go back, you think about the toys, and it makes you feel better."

Growing Up MonsterMad with Pittsburgh's CHILLY BILLY CARDILLE and CHILLER THEATER

For those of us growing up in the late sixties in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or northern West Virginia, one name was virtually synonymous with late-night horror: "Chilly Billy" Cardille and his program Chiller Theater.Chiller began in 1963 when Cardille, Pittsburgh TV station WIIC's wrestling announcer and host of the kiddie show Tip Top Time, was approached to host Channel 11's new afternoon horror movie showcase, called Chiller Theater from the beginning.
The films Cardille had to choose from were the great bumper crop from Univeral's heyday — Screen Gems' famous Shock Theater package — plus a few select classics from the Atom Age fifties. The program finally came into its own after a time change to 11:30 p.m. in the mid-sixties. Each show opened to the spooky strains of guitarist Al Caiola's raunchy arrangement of an unforgettable tune called "Experiment in Terror," from a film score by Pittsburgh's own Henry Mancini — a haunting melody loaded with sax appeal.
Cardille, usually clad in a dress suit, a tux or a turtleneck sweater, was a rather restrained host at first. However, as the show's notoriety peaked in the early seventies, he attacked his role with gusto, adding skits, paranormal bits and large doses of good humor.
"Chilly Billy," as Cardille came to be known, also brought along a bizarre continuing cast of supporting characters: "Norman the Castle Keeper" (Norman Elder), "Stephen the Castle Prankster" (Steven Luncinski), statuesque zombie "Terminal Stare" (Donna Rae), and "Georgette the Fudge Maker" (Bonnie Sue Barney) — not to mention "Skeets Skeltino the Pizza Man," "Sister Suzie" (Joyce Sterling), "Beauregard C. Beauregard" (Ted James), and occasional celebrity guests like Phyllis Diller, Barbara (Get Smart) Feldon, and wrestler Bruno Sammartino.During the glory days of the show, Cardille would sometimes show three or more films each show night, challenging the viewer to stay up ever later with the genial host and his friends. Between films he would predict the future, tell horoscopes, and even hawk his own line of tuxedoes!
The final stamp of approval came when Cardille was invited to play himself in Pittsburgh filmmaker George Romero's groundbreaking horror classic Night of the Living Dead (1968).
In a very effective (but unusually serious) performance, he appears in the film as Channel 11 reporter Bill Cardille, conducting an on-the-spot interview with Chief of Police McClelland about the progress of the zombie hunt (see sidebar).
I can still remember being about 8 or 9 years old and watching WIIC's afternoon wrestling show on Saturdays, just to see "Chilly Billy" announce the films that would be shown on Chiller Theater later than night. Sometimes he would even show a clip of the Mummy, the Wolf Man, or the Frankenstein Monster.
My own personal initiation into horror fandom was a double-feature of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and House of Frankenstein on Chiller Theater To this day, these are still my favorite horror films.
With the advent of Saturday Night Live in the late seventies, Chiller was moved to a later time slot — 1:00 a.m. Still, Bill and his cast soldiered on. During the late seventies and early eighties, Cardille showed several Hammer pictures, independant chillers like Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, and even foreign horrors like Paul Naschy films.
It wasn't until 1983 that the "host" format was dropped and the cast departed. Chiller Theater was replaced for a while by a good syndicated horror movie package called Haunted Hollywood. An off-camera voice-over by the great John Carradine instructed the viewer to "turn down the sound...but don't touch that dial!" It lasted another five years.
The cast of Chiller Theater occasionally reunites for special appearances, notably for a televised show reunion in the early '90's, and at the 1993 "Zombie Jamboree" in Pittsburgh celebrating the 25th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead.
Bill Cardille still displays a genuine fondness and no condescension for the program which has given him beloved status among all monster fans in the broadcast area.He currently works as the the morning weatherman for WPXI in Pittsburgh. (True in July 1997 when Paul's article was published; Bill Cardille now has a radio show playing oldies from 10 a.m - 3 p.m every weekday on WJAS-AM 1320 in Pittsburgh — E-gor.)
The influence of Chiller Theater on its legion of fans is incalculable, and Pittsburgh is quite the haven for East Coast monster fandom.
Director/makeup artist/actor Tom Savini and fellow makeup man Joe Blasco both started out as young fans of Chiller, often appearing on the show in their own homegrown monster makeups.
Sometimes I catch myself popping one of the old Universal films in the VCR, trying to recreate that initial feeling of terror and dread I felt many years ago, when Chilly Billy introduced me to poor, tormented Lawrence Talbot and the naive, well-meaning scientist who just couldn't resist seeing Frankenstein's monster restored to its full power...

BILL: Chief... Chief McClelland -- how's everything going?
CHIEF: Aw, things aren't goin' too bad. The men are takin' it pretty good.
BILL: Chief, do you think we'll be able to defeat these things?
CHIEF: Well, we killed 19 of 'em today, right in this area... these last three we caught tryin' to claw their way into an abandoned shed. They musta thought somebody was in there... there wasn't, though. We heard 'em makin' all kindsa noise -- we came over, beat 'em off and blasted 'em down.
BILL: Chief, if I were surrounded by 6 or 8 of these things, would I stand a chance with them?
CHIEF: Well, there's no problem -- if you had a gun, shoot 'em in the head, that's a sure way to kill 'em. If you don't, get yourself a club or a torch, beat 'em or burn 'em, they go up pretty easy.
BILL: Well, Chief McClelland, how long do you think it'll take you until you get the situation under control?
CHIEF: Well that's pretty hard to say -- we don't know how many of 'em there are. We know when we find 'em we can kill 'em.
BILL: Are they slow-moving, Chief?
CHIEF: Yeah, they're dead, they're... all messed up.
BILL: Well, with time, would you say you oughtta be able to wrap this up in 24 hours?
CHIEF: Well, we don't really know. We know we'll probably be into it most of the night, probably into the early mornin'. We're workin' our way toward Willard, and we'll team up with the National Guard over there, and then we'll be able to give a more definite view.
BILL: Thank you very much, Chief McClelland. This is Bill Cardille, WIIC-TV 11 News.

Never enough Elvira? There’s more to come

It’s hard to say what they bode for the world, or even which is more startling, but here are two astounding facts: Elvira, the vampy, campy horror hostess with the enormous, um, following, envisions an America ruled by an army of her clones, one in every shopping mall and car wash.And when she held tryouts, 2,000 women (and men!) applied for the job.“It was insane!” she recounts of the tryout — (or “open casket call,” as she put it) last summer.
“We started at 11 a.m. and we ended at about 2 in the morning the next day, interviewing just a few of them.”The results can be seen Saturday night at (of course!) midnight, when “The Search for the Next Elvira” starts a three-week run on the Fox Reality Channel that ends on (of course!) Halloween.
Even by Elvira’s generous standards, things got a little bizarre — for instance, the woman wearing a straw peasant hat and a veil who ran up and down the stage shrieking in Chinese until security men tackled her.
“She didn’t make the cut,” muses Elvira, “but she made for a good, entertaining show.”
But bizarre is pretty much the norm for Elvira, who’s spun an entire career out of a swooping Goth mini-dress, double-entendre wisecracks (her dream date: “the guy with the biggest bulge — I’m referring to his wallet, of course”) and an undying affection for scruffy little horror movies.
From a gig hosting movies like “Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks” and “Werewolf of Washington,” she leveraged a 26-year career as the uncontested Queen of Halloween and turned her name into a haunted-household word: a syndicated television star with three movies of her own, a string of lucrative commercial endorsements, lines of CDs and DVDs, and even a couple of pinball machines named after her.
So, for that matter, is the computer system in the Stealth bomber.And when aides in the Clinton White House began to get a creepy feeling about an ever-lurking intern named Monica Lewinsky, they nicknamed her Elvira.
(Sniped back Elvira herself: “At least I get my little black dress cleaned once in a while.”)
It all started as a spare-change-on-the-weekend lark for a struggling young actress and former Vegas showgirl named Cassandra Peterson. When a local Los Angeles TV producer saw her do a couple of comic sketches in 1981 with the Groundlings, an improv-comedy troupe that included future “Saturday Night Live” stars Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman, he invited her to audition for a job hosting horror movies at his station.
Back in the three-channel universe of those days, practically every city in America had a local show of schlocky horror movies with a weird host who wore fangs or popped out of a coffin: Pittsburgh’s Zacherle, the Cool Ghoul;
Cleveland’s Ghoulardi; D.C.’s Count Gore Duval. But when Los Angeles’ Sinister Seymour died — really died, not just climbed into a casket — station KHJ auditioned hundreds of potential replacements without success.The KHJ producer asked Peterson to try out for the job in one of her Groundling characters, a clueless Valley Girl actress-wannabe. ‘I was like, ‘Oh, whoop-tee-doo,”‘ recalls Peterson — oh, the hell with it, Elvira.
“Cause I was actually looking for a real gig. I went in and auditioned and I got the part. Then he said, ‘Come up with a spooky look.’ ... I’m going, ‘This is so lame. OK, whatever — I’m getting paid $300.”‘The look — black wig, moonbeam makeup accentuated with panda eye shadow, and the tiny dress, undergirded by an industrial-strength bra, that showed off those Vegas legs and cleavage — was Elvira’s.
The movies were KHJ’s, backlot quickies with cheapie zombies and vampires that came packaged with the more expensive films KHJ wanted to buy.“There was no ‘picking’ involved,” Elvira hoots at a question about who chose them. “We got them out of Dumpsters in the back of the building ... Choose? Yuch. Definitely not a matter of choice.“But there were a few hidden gems.
Actually there’s one — and it goes against my grain because it’s kind of a slasher movie — but it’s just an amazingly creepy and beautiful movie.It’s called ‘Peeping Tom’by the same guy (director Michael Powell) that did ‘The Red Shoes.’ Such a creepy, weird, awful, ecccch movie. But I thought that was a real gem ...“Pigs, about wild pigs that go on a rampage and kill people — how often do you run across that?
There was one called ‘Dracula’s Daughter,’ which sounds stupid, but was really a great movie. It’s shockingly lesbian for 1936. I couldn’t believe it.
I was just saying, woooh! It was really sexy. I liked it because the woman (title character Gloria Holden) was so powerful. She was the star of the movie and she had that same thing Elvira has going on — she didn’t take any crap from guys.
She was in charge all the way. Very cool movie.”But for every ‘Dracula’s Daughter’ there were about a dozen unspeakably bad flicks like ‘Monstroid’ or ‘The House that Screamed Blood.’
Elvira broke every rule in the TV book by mercilessly mocking them on the air, though her love for the genre was obvious.
It dates back to her childhood in Colorado Springs when she saw a Vincent Price movie, “House on Haunted Hill,” that climaxed with a memorable gimmick — a skeleton flew out from behind the screen and over the audience, rigged on a pulley.“God, that movie traumatized me as a child,” she sighs happily.
“I’m still having therapy from it. ... I was the only little girl that was not collecting Barbies. I was collecting Aurora model kits like Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy.
That’s what I did when I was a kid. So I was already weird to begin with.”Her formula worked. In two beats of a bat’s wings, her show was nationally syndicated as “Movie Macabre.”It lasted until 1993, when the mushrooming number of cable channels did in many of the independent stations. Elvira is frustrated that she’s never been able to strike a deal to host horror movies on cable, even though those films are a staple on networks like Chiller and Sci Fi.“I have been approached to do it,” she says, “but generally they weren’t the kind of movies that I wanted to do.
I don’t want to do the modern slasher flicks — I am really very anti- those type of maniac-kills-girl-with-a-knife kind of movies, that slasher stuff. I really like the oldies but ghoulies, the cheesy good-bad horror movies of the past ... To do the modern stuff wouldn’t be very Elvira-y.”
Not that there’s any lack of demand for Elvira. Her own movies, merchandising and personal appearances keep her busy — the latter so much that she came up with the franchising idea behind “The Search for the Next Elvira.”
‘I’ve been going on a lot of Elvira gigs where I’m signing autographs and I notice people about 30 years old and younger who come up and say, ‘Are you the real Elvira?”‘ she explains.
“At first I was totally p.o.-ed, but later, I thought, hmmm, that’s giving me a brilliant idea.“Anybody under 30 sort of grew with Elvira just in the culture, floating around. I don’t even know that they know there’s a real one.
It’s like Batman or Superman or SpongeBob. You walk on Hollywood Boulevard and they’re all there (in costumes) and tourists are taking pictures with them and getting their autograph. Hey, that could be me.
”So here she is with a reality show in which aspiring young Elviras will face challenges just like the contestants on “Survivor,” except these will involve “furry little rodents and creepy crawling things and coffins, getting buried alive — and lingerie, of course,” she says.“They will also have to be fearless and have a fantastically cheesy sense of humor and real true love of the horror genre. All of those things are absolutely indispensable to Elvira. So it’s not all about what a great figure they have.
Although they’ve got to have that, too. And no modesty and no shame. Oh, for God’s sake, no. Immediately they’re out if they have any sense of shame whatsoever. How could I have done this for so many years if I had any shame?”

3 "WORLD-CLASS" SPORTS TEAMS IN ONE LITTLE CITY! ! ....STEELERS, PIRATES AND PENGUINS. AT ONE TIME WE HAD A 4TH, THE PITTSBURGH SPIRIT SOCCER PROFFESSIONALS. I SAW THEM PLAY AND WAS A NEW FAN OF THE SPORT. AS MUCH AS I CAN BE A "FAN", SINCE....."I DON'T DO SPORTS" !PEOPLE LAUGH AT MY KNOWLEDGE AND ALSO AT MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE, BECAUSE I NEVER WAS AN "AVID" SPORTS FAN.....BUT MY HUSBAND WAS. HE'D HAVE 4 GAMES GOING AT ONCE AND I WAS THE PROVERBIAL "FOOTBALL WIDOW".I COULDN'T HELP, BUT TO LEARN THINGS, WHILE LISTENING TO THE BLARE OF THE TVS AND THE ROAR OF MY MAN, BUT I GOT SOME THINGS MIXED UP, ONCE IN A WHILE.......I THOUGHT FRANCO HARRIS WAS IRISH, AND HIS NAME WAS "FRANK O'HARRIS", LIKE "O'LEARY"......HEY ! EASY MISTAKE !I DID A COUPLE OF CHARITY EVENTS, WITH FRANCO, AND WAS WITH HIM THE DAY HE WAS DUE TO BE ENTERED INTO THE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME.I TOLD HIM THE "O'LEARY" STORY AND HE GOT A GOOD LAUGH, BUT I THINK THAT'S WHAT HE LIKED ABOUT ME. I LIKED HIM, FOR THE "MAN" HE WAS, THE BEAUTIFUL SOUL AND SPIRIT, NOT ONLY AS A FOOTBALL ICON! I THINK THAT'S WHY HE TOOK A LITTLE TIME TO TALK , WHEN WE BUMPED INTO EACH OTHER, ON HALL OF FAME DAY.IT CALMED HIM DOWN, FROM THE JITTERS AND RELIEVED HIM OF BEING EXPECTED TO LIVE UP TO "BEING A GOD". HE LIKED BEING APPRECIATED, AS JUST A GOOD FRIEND OF SOMEONE WHO "DIDN'T DO SPORTS".BUT I GOT AN EVEN BIGGER "HOUNDING", BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE HEINZ WARD AWARD WAS A LOCAL HEINZ KETCHUP COMPANY ENDOWMENT! I WATCHED THE SUPERBOWL WITH SOME LADY FRIENDS AND WHEN I HEARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT, ABOUT THE AWARD, I KEPT ASKING, BUT "WHO" WON THE AWARD?ONE LADY WAS KIND ENOUGH TO ANSWER, "HEINZ WARD" AND I REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT "WHO" WON THE HEINZ AWARD? IT SOUNDED LIKE WE WERE DOING A "WHO'S ON FIRST" COMEDY SKIT, BUT I WAS DEAD SERIOUS! SHE FINALLY GOT ME TO UNDERSTAND THAT "THE WINNING MAN" WAS NAMED HEINZ ! !PITTSBURGH PEOPLE LOVE THEIR TEAMS ! EVEN THOSE WHO "DON'T DO SPORTS" !I WONDERED HOW THIS MODERATELY SIZED CITY CAME TO HAVE 3 CHAMPION LEVEL TEAMS AND I DECIDED IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE FACT THAT THIS IS A CITY OF "CHAMPION" PEOPLE !THEY ARE MOSTLY LABORING FOLKS, NOT MUCH DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER, OR FROM THEIR PARENTS. THEY ARE HONEST, HARD-WORKING, INTELLIGENT. BUT MOST WERE NEVER INVITED INTO ANY "ADVANCED" CLASSES, ALTHOUGH MANY COULD HAVE KEPT UP WITH THE BEST OF THEM !MANY WERE EXCELLENT SPORTS PLAYERS, BUT WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE THE TEAM......ALTHOUGH THEY COULD HAVE KEPT UP WITH THE BEST OF THEM !MANY OF THEM VIEW THESE TV PLAY-OFFS AS A PERSONAL EFFORT. The program finally came into its own after a time change to 11:30 p.m. in the mid-sixties. (See Chiller Theater TV Log for a growing list of films shown during the entire run; help if you can! — E-gor)Each show opened to the spooky strains of guitarist Al Caiola's raunchy arrangement of an unforgettable tune called "Experiment in Terror," from a film score by Pittsburgh's own Henry Mancini — a haunting melody loaded with sax appeal.Cardille, usually clad in a dress suit, a tux or a turtleneck sweater, was a rather restrained host at first. However, as the show's notoriety peaked in the early seventies, he attacked his role with gusto, adding skits, paranormal bits and large doses of good humor."Chilly Billy," as Cardille came to be known, also brought along a bizarre continuing cast of supporting characters: "Norman the Castle Keeper" (Norman Elder), "Stephen the Castle Prankster" (Steven Luncinski), statuesque zombie "Terminal Stare" (Donna Rae), and "Georgette the Fudge Maker" (Bonnie Sue Barney) — not to mention "Skeets Skeltino the Pizza Man," "Sister Suzie" (Joyce Sterling), "Beauregard C. Beauregard" (Ted James), and occasional celebrity guests like Phyllis Diller, Barbara (Get Smart) Feldon, and wrestler Bruno Sammartino.During the glory days of the show, Cardille would sometimes show three or more films each show night, challenging the viewer to stay up ever later with the genial host and his friends. Between films he would predict the future, tell horoscopes, and even hawk his own line of tuxedoes!The final stamp of approval came when Cardille was invited to play himself in Pittsburgh filmmaker George Romero's groundbreaking horror classic Night of the Living Dead (1968).In a very effective (but unusually serious) performance, he appears in the film as Channel 11 reporter Bill Cardille, conducting an on-the-spot interview with Chief of Police McClelland about the progress of the zombie hunt (see sidebar).I can still remember being about 8 or 9 years old and watching WIIC's afternoon wrestling show on Saturdays, just to see "Chilly Billy" announce the films that would be shown on Chiller Theater later than night. Sometimes he would even show a clip of the Mummy, the Wolf Man, or the Frankenstein Monster.My own personal initiation into horror fandom was a double-feature of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and House of Frankenstein on Chiller Theater To this day, these are still my favorite horror films.With the advent of Saturday Night Live in the late seventies, Chiller was moved to a later time slot — 1:00 a.m. Still, Bill and his cast soldiered on. During the late seventies and early eighties, Cardille showed several Hammer pictures, independant chillers like Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, and even foreign horrors like Paul Naschy films.It wasn't until 1983 that the "host" format was dropped and the cast departed. Chiller Theater was replaced for a while by a good syndicated horror movie package called Haunted Hollywood. An off-camera voice-over by the great John Carradine instructed the viewer to "turn down the sound...but don't touch that dial!" It lasted another five years.The cast of Chiller Theater occasionally reunites for special appearances, notably for a televised show reunion in the early '90's, and at the 1993 "Zombie Jamboree" in Pittsburgh celebrating the 25th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead.Bill Cardille still displays a genuine fondness and no condescension for the program which has given him beloved status among all monster fans in the broadcast area.He currently works as the the morning weatherman for WPXI in Pittsburgh. Never enough Elvira? There’s more to comeBy Glenn Garvin McClatchy NewspapersIt’s hard to say what they bode for the world, or even which is more startling, but here are two astounding facts: Elvira, the vampy, campy horror hostess with the enormous, um, following, envisions an America ruled by an army of her clones, one in every shopping mall and car wash.And when she held tryouts, 2,000 women (and men!) applied for the job.“It was insane!” she recounts of the tryout — (or “open casket call,” as she put it) last summer.“We started at 11 a.m. and we ended at about 2 in the morning the next day, interviewing just a few of them.”The results can be seen Saturday night at (of course!) midnight, when “The Search for the Next Elvira” starts a three-week run on the Fox Reality Channel that ends on (of course!) Halloween.Even by Elvira’s generous standards, things got a little bizarre — for instance, the woman wearing a straw peasant hat and a veil who ran up and down the stage shrieking in Chinese until security men tackled her.“She didn’t make the cut,” muses Elvira, “but she made for a good, entertaining show.”But bizarre is pretty much the norm for Elvira, who’s spun an entire career out of a swooping Goth mini-dress, double-entendre wisecracks (her dream date: “the guy with the biggest bulge — I’m referring to his wallet, of course”) and an undying affection for scruffy little horror movies.From a gig hosting movies like “Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks” and “Werewolf of Washington,” she leveraged a 26-year career as the uncontested Queen of Halloween and turned her name into a haunted-household word: a syndicated television star with three movies of her own, a string of lucrative commercial endorsements, lines of CDs and DVDs, and even a couple of pinball machines named after her.So, for that matter, is the computer system in the Stealth bomber.And when aides in the Clinton White House began to get a creepy feeling about an ever-lurking intern named Monica Lewinsky, they nicknamed her Elvira.(Sniped back Elvira herself: “At least I get my little black dress cleaned once in a while.”)It all started as a spare-change-on-the-weekend lark for a struggling young actress and former Vegas showgirl named Cassandra Peterson. When a local Los Angeles TV producer saw her do a couple of comic sketches in 1981 with the Groundlings, an improv-comedy troupe that included future “Saturday Night Live” stars Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman, he invited her to audition for a job hosting horror movies at his station.Back in the three-channel universe of those days, practically every city in America had a local show of schlocky horror movies with a weird host who wore fangs or popped out of a coffin: Pittsburgh’s Zacherle, the Cool Ghoul; Cleveland’s Ghoulardi; D.C.’s Count Gore Duval. But when Los Angeles’ Sinister Seymour died — really died, not just climbed into a casket — station KHJ auditioned hundreds of potential replacements without success.The KHJ producer asked Peterson to try out for the job in one of her Groundling characters, a clueless Valley Girl actress-wannabe. ‘I was like, ‘Oh, whoop-tee-doo,”‘ recalls Peterson — oh, the hell with it, Elvira.“Cause I was actually looking for a real gig. I went in and auditioned and I got the part. Then he said, ‘Come up with a spooky look.’ ... I’m going, ‘This is so lame. OK, whatever — I’m getting paid $300.”‘The look — black wig, moonbeam makeup accentuated with panda eye shadow, and the tiny dress, undergirded by an industrial-strength bra, that showed off those Vegas legs and cleavage — was Elvira’s.The movies were KHJ’s, backlot quickies with cheapie zombies and vampires that came packaged with the more expensive films KHJ wanted to buy.“There was no ‘picking’ involved,” Elvira hoots at a question about who chose them. “We got them out of Dumpsters in the back of the building ... Choose? Yuch. Definitely not a matter of choice.“But there were a few hidden gems.Actually there’s one — and it goes against my grain because it’s kind of a slasher movie — but it’s just an amazingly creepy and beautiful movie.It’s called ‘Peeping Tom’by the same guy (director Michael Powell) that did ‘The Red Shoes.’ Such a creepy, weird, awful, ecccch movie. But I thought that was a real gem ...“Pigs, about wild pigs that go on a rampage and kill people — how often do you run across that?There was one called ‘Dracula’s Daughter,’ which sounds stupid, but was really a great movie. It’s shockingly lesbian for 1936. I couldn’t believe it.I was just saying, woooh! It was really sexy. I liked it because the woman (title character Gloria Holden) was so powerful. She was the star of the movie and she had that same thing Elvira has going on — she didn’t take any crap from guys.She was in charge all the way. Very cool movie.”But for every ‘Dracula’s Daughter’ there were about a dozen unspeakably bad flicks like ‘Monstroid’ or ‘The House that Screamed Blood.’Elvira broke every rule in the TV book by mercilessly mocking them on the air, though her love for the genre was obvious.It dates back to her childhood in Colorado Springs when she saw a Vincent Price movie, “House on Haunted Hill,” that climaxed with a memorable gimmick — a skeleton flew out from behind the screen and over the audience, rigged on a pulley.“God, that movie traumatized me as a child,” she sighs happily.“I’m still having therapy from it. ... I was the only little girl that was not collecting Barbies. I was collecting Aurora model kits like Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy.That’s what I did when I was a kid. So I was already weird to begin with.”Her formula worked. In two beats of a bat’s wings, her show was nationally syndicated as “Movie Macabre.”It lasted until 1993, when the mushrooming number of cable channels did in many of the independent stations. Elvira is frustrated that she’s never been able to strike a deal to host horror movies on cable, even though those films are a staple on networks like Chiller and Sci Fi.“I have been approached to do it,” she says, “but generally they weren’t the kind of movies that I wanted to do.I don’t want to do the modern slasher flicks — I am really very anti- those type of maniac-kills-girl-with-a-knife kind of movies, that slasher stuff. I really like the oldies but ghoulies, the cheesy good-bad horror movies of the past ... To do the modern stuff wouldn’t be very Elvira-y.”Not that there’s any lack of demand for Elvira. Her own movies, merchandising and personal appearances keep her busy — the latter so much that she came up with the franchising idea behind “The Search for the Next Elvira.”‘I’ve been going on a lot of Elvira gigs where I’m signing autographs and I notice people about 30 years old and younger who come up and say, ‘Are you the real Elvira?”‘ she explains.“At first I was totally p.o.-ed, but later, I thought, hmmm, that’s giving me a brilliant idea.“Anybody under 30 sort of grew with Elvira just in the culture, floating around. I don’t even know that they know there’s a real one.It’s like Batman or Superman or SpongeBob. You walk on Hollywood Boulevard and they’re all there (in costumes) and tourists are taking pictures with them and getting their autograph. Hey, that could be me.”So here she is with a reality show in which aspiring young Elviras will face challenges just like the contestants on “Survivor,” except these will involve “furry little rodents and creepy crawling things and coffins, getting buried alive — and lingerie, of course,” she says.“They will also have to be fearless and have a fantastically cheesy sense of humor and real true love of the horror genre. All of those things are absolutely indispensable to Elvira. So it’s not all about what a great figure they have.Although they’ve got to have that, too. And no modesty and no shame. Oh, for God’s sake, no. Immediately they’re out if they have any sense of shame whatsoever. Gene Gene the Dancing MachineFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, searchGene Gene the Dancing Machine, aka Eugene Patton (born April 25, 1932), was a member of the stage crew and occasional performer on The Gong Show.Gene was the first African-American member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees, Local 33.He was one of several amateur performers who would "warm up" and entertain the audience during commercial breaks.Host Chuck Barris found him so entertaining that he had him dance on the show on-air, and he proved so popular that he soon became a recurring act, an occasional judge, and eventually the regular closing act for the show, with the credits regularly rolling over his enthusiastic dancing, often joined by Chuck, the celebrity judges, the stage hands, and whoever else felt like joining in.Usually Gong paddles, flowers, plastic fake food, stuffed animals and various other items were thrown onstage for good measure. He appeared in 1980s The Gong Show Movie and had some dialogue.His attire usually consisted of a green windbreaker jacket, bell-bottomed jeans, sneakers, a yellow polo shirt, and a black painters hat.The genial heavy-set man wore a green warmup outfit and often came onstage dancing to Milton Delugg's "Band with a Thug" while they played Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside" tune.Gene had a cameo as himself in the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.After The Gong Show was cancelled, Patton remained a stagehand at NBC.He was recognized backstage at The Tonight Show in the 1990s

THE GONG SHOW MOVIE (1980).Chuck Barris' THE GONG SHOW premiered on NBC in 1976, became a surprise hit, and is nowadays, the only worthwhile programming on the lamentable Game Show Network.Back when I was a teenager, I loved this idiotic showcase for migraine-inducing 'talent', but I never had the chance to check out this big screen spin-off. Consequently, I've been searching for a copy of it for years, in order to satiate some long-dormant, masochistic desire.Boy, was I surprised to discover that this critically-abhorred mess has its fair share of acidic charms, since it not only gives the viewer a raunchier version of this TV phenom (including a glimpse of Jaye P. Morgan's breasts--which excited me as much as the idea of Moms Mabley in a g-string), but also a bombastic glimpse into the life of producer/host Barris.In addition, Barris directs the film, appears in almost every scene, and even sings the goddamned theme song!Still, this abrasive romp is more than a simple ego-trip.First off, it was written by Barris and (more important) underground filmmaking legend Robert Downey (CHAFED ELBOWS, GREASER'S PALACE).And together they blend fact, fiction, black comedy, and casual weirdness into a postmodern take on media stardom. Although Barris was the auteur behind this flick, he certainly doesn't paint a flattering portrait of himself.Portrayed as a haggard guy sick 'n' tired of his daily routine, he's assaulted by pathetic contestant-wannabees, is in the midst of breaking up with his girlfriend (Robin Altman), and (worst of all) deals with weaselly network execs worried about the show's increasingly-gonzo edge.So, essentially, we're supposed to sympathize for poor Chuckie, who's trapped in this hectic, but extremely wealthy lifestyle. Right...We're also privy to brief snippets of the actual TV-show (complete with undeleted swearing) and its talent-barren contestants, plus such tidbits as an elderly contestant having a heart attack backstage, and Jaye P. waking up in an ultra-king-size bed with four men.Best of all is the way "little fart" Barris is continually annoyed by his ugliest, most obnoxious fans--thereby, happily biting the hand which feeds him.Finally, Barris flees the country in his search for anonymity, and ends up sitting in the middle of a Morocco desert. But he's still unable to escape the musical finale. Don't forget appearances from Jamie Farr, Pat McCormick, Rip Taylor, Tony Randall, Harvey Lembeck, a then-unknown Phil Hartman, plus GONG SHOW regulars The Unknown Comic and "Gene, Gene, The Dancing Machine."While it's no surprise this died a quick (yet painful) death at the boxoffice, this self-indulgent hunk of career suicide also has the balls to do whatever the hell it wants (and in doing so, is as honest a portrait of Hollywood success, excess and bad craziness as you'll ever see from a major studio).© 1997 by Steven Puchalski.

I READ TODAY, THAT THERE IS NOW A POSSIBILITY THAT UP TO 500 BUDDIST MONKS ALSO ARE HEADING TO PITTSBURGH TO RALLY AT THE G-20 SUMMIT.......WHY ?
EASY ! THIS IS EXACTLY THE EXAMPLE I NEEDED TO GET THIS EVENT INTO PROPER PERSPECTIVE, FOR THOSE WHO ARE LOSTT IN THE LOCAL AGENDA LAND !
FIRST OF ALL THEY NEED TO SHAKE THE DELUSION THAT THIS IS A PITTSBURGH EVENT. IT IS NOT, THERE WILL BE NOTHING ON THE AGENDA, THAT WILL BE DISCUSSING PITTSBURGH ISSUES.
IT IS A GLOBAL SUMMIT OF WORLD LEADERS, WHO JUST HAPPENED TO DECIDE THAT PITTSBURGH MIGHT BE A NICE PLACE TO JOIN TOGETHER, FOR THEIR MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS ON POSSIBLY, WORLD ECONOMY, THE PRESERVATION AND STABLIZATION OF THE VALUE OF THE EURO-DOLLAR, THE POSSIBLE DEVALATION OF THE U.S. DOLLAR, SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN AND CUBA, THE CONTINUING EFFORTS TO AVOID ESCALATIONS TOWARD WORLD WAR III, THE CONCERN THAT IRAN MAY BE DEVELOPING NUCLEAR WEAPONS.........BIG ISSUES ! THEY ARE NOT HERE TO LISTEN TO WHAT PITTSBURGHERS THINK ABOUT ANYTHING !
NOW, WITH THEIR PURPOSE CLARIFIED, WE NEED TO LOOK AT HOW THEIR ARRIVAL IS BEING USED OR EXPLOITED BY GROUPS THAT HAVE BEEN REGISTERING COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RIGHT TO PROTEST.
THIS IS A BIGGER PROBLEM, THAN I BELIEVE THE LOCAL POLITICOS ARE CREDITING IT TO BE. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? MANY, I'M SURE, HAVE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS, THAT THEY BELIEVE WILL IMPROVE LIFE SITUATIONS FOR OTHERS. GOD BLESS THEM AND GOOD LUCK TO THEIR EFFORTS. I AM SURE THAT THEY ARE NOT AT ALL "PROTESTING" OR COMPLAINING THAT THE G-20 WILL BE PRESENT HERE, OR ANY OF THE SUBJECT MATTERS THAT THE G-20 WILL BE DISCUSSING.. SO WHY ARE WE CALLING THEM "PROTESTERS" ?
I THINK WE SHOULD VIEW THEM AS "LOBBYISTS" TO MORE CORRECTLY COMPREHEND THEIR MOTIVATIONS. NOW, I MUST SAY, THAT I STILL CONSIDER THIS SUMMIT, AN INAPPROPRIATE TIME TO PUSH "LOBBY ISSUES" ONTO THE TABLE OF DISCUSSION. BUT I AM EVEN MORE OPPOSED TO THE SLOWING EVOLVING EVIDENCE, THAT WE HAVE AMONG THOSE "LOBBYISTS", A FACTION OF APPARENT "CHAOS CREATORS", WHO HAVE BEEN PHONING AND ATTEMPTING TO PULL EVEN MORE THOUSANDS OF "LOBBYISTS" INTO PITTSBURGH FOR THE 2 DAY PERIOD.
THE NEWS, THIS MORNING, OF THAT GROUP, OF UP TO 500 TIBETAN MONKS, ALREADY HEADING TO PITTSBURGH, TO PROTEST THEIR TREATMENT BY CHINA, BURSTS FORTH THE REALITY OF THE COMING SITUATION AND JAMS IT IN TO STIR CLARITY OF OUR FUZZY, STUMBLING BRAINS, BETTER THAN ANY OTHER EXAMPLE I COULD USE TO REVEAL THE URGENCY, OF MY PLEA TO THE ADMINISTRATORS, TO MOVE THIS EVENT TO THE SUBURBS.
I READ THAT IT WAS ANNOUNCED BY AN AMERICAN, WHO PROBABLY SUGGESTED IT TO THEIR GROUP............AND TO HOW MANY OTHER GROUPS...............THAT THEY DESCEND ONTO PITTSBURGH. WE COULD HAVE A VERY MEAN INTENTIONED EFFORT TRYING TO ORGANIZE ABSOLUTE CHAOS HERE, WITH AN EXORBINATE NUMBER OF OUT OF TOWNERS PLANNING TO ARRIVE FOR THE SAME 2 DAY EVENT.
WE HAVE TO RE-ADJUST THE THOUGHT PROCESS TO BE PREPARED FOR UNTOLD NUMBERS OF VISITORS. THE ESTIMATED GUESS WAS ONLY ABOUT 10% OF WHAT THE REALITY WILL BE.
THESE MONKS ARE AN EXAMPLE, THAT THEY ARE NOT EVEN FROM THIS COUNTRY, BUT ARE INTERESTED IN EXPLOITING THE PRESCENSE OF THESE GLOBAL LEADERS SUMMIT TO HAVE A "PHOTO OPPORTUNITY" WITH GLOBAL MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE EVENT.
THAT'S ALL ANY OF THESE GROUPS ARE DOING. THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO SNATCH A "PHOTO OPPORTUNITY" DURING A GLOBAL EVENT, TO ANNOUNCE AND PROMOTE THEIR ISSUES AND AGENDAS.
I TRULY DO NOT THINK THAT THE G-20 PLANNERS HAVE HAD A CORRECT HANDLE ON ALL OF THIS MOTIVE AND PROBABLE OUTCOME. THEY HAVE BEEN MISDIRECTED TO TRY TO SHOW HOW NICE OUR CITY IS........NO ONE REALLY CARES, EXCEPT MAYBE PRESIDENT OBAMA, WHO INITIATED THE LOCATING OF THE SUMMIT IN PITTSBURGH, IN ORDER TO ASSIST PITTSBURGH IN GLOBALIZING THEIR DETERMINED "METROPOLITAN IMAGE" SETTING.
BUT, NOW WE HAVE MORE AND MORE GROUPS PLANNING TO ARRIVE, TO A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT ALREADY WAS MAX SPACED-OUT AND CONGESTED. WE LOST SPACE TO SECURITY ROPE-OFF AND STREET CLOSE-DOWNS AND BEYOND THE NO-ACCESS PERIMETER, WE HAVE PLANNED PEDESTRIAN CONGESTION OF "LOBBYISTS" STANDING IN THE STREETS, BLOCKING TRAFFIC FLOW OF THE ACCESSIBLE INNER-PERIMETER, AND NOW MORE AND MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS OF INCREASED PLANNED GROUP ATTENDANCE, THAT WILL TOTALLY EXPAND THAT ACCESSIBLE INNER-PERIMETER TO EXCEED THE BOUNDRIES OF THE OUTER-ACCESSIBLE AREAS AND CREATE A TOTAL SHUT-DOWN OF TRAFFIC FLOW AS FAR BACK AS OAKLAND, SQUIRREL HILL, EAST LIBERTY AND BLOOMFIELD!
WE CANNOT CONSCIOUSLY CONSIDER GAMBLING LIVES TO THIS POSSIBILITY OF MAXED-OUT MASSIVE CHAOS.
WHAT IF..................WE NEEDED TO EVACUATE THE CITY ?
WHAT IF.....................WE EVEN HAD A FIRE WITH-IN THE NO-ACCESS PERIMITER? IMMPOSSIBLE TO REACH OR CLEAR FOR MOVEMENT OF EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT.
WE MUST FOCUS 24/7/365 ON THE NEED TO MAINTAIN EMERGENCY ACCESS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF THE NEED FOR EVACUATION. BUT AT A GLOBAL EVENT, LIKE THIS, WE MUST PLACE IT AT AN EVEN HIGHER LEVEL OF "OCCURRENCE POSSIBILITY".
THE DOWNTOWN PLANNING MUST CEASE.
WE MUST MOVE THIS TO THE SUBURBS. THESE PEOPLE ARE DETERMINED TO HAVE THEIR 15 MINUTES OF FAME TO PROMOTE THEIR AGENDAS......LET THEM HAVE IT !
BUT, PITTSBURGH ADMISTRATORS MUST HAVE CONTROL OF IT AND THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE CONTROL OF IT IS TO PLAN FOR A POSITIVE APPROACH TO THE INCREASING AND PRESSING NEEDS OF THESE CROWDS.
LET'S ASSUME THAT MY SUGGESTION FOR C.C.A.C.-BOYCE, AND BOYCE PARK ARE ACCEPTABLE AS THE IDEAL LOCATIONS TO ACCOMODATE BOTH THE SECURITY NEEDS FOR THE G-20 ATTENDEES AND THE MASSIVE PERSONAL NEEDS OF THE GROWING NUMBERS OF "LOBBYISTS" AND CURIOSITY ON-LOOKERS.
WE ALREADY HAVE SECURITY PLANS AND MINUTE BY MINUTE FUNCTIONS FOR THE MEETINGS COMPLETED. JUST ERASE ALL THE SHUT-DOWN AND BUS AND TRAFFIC REROUTING PLANS AND RELAX WITH THE LAND SECURITY CONVENIENCE OF ONLY 2 ROADS THAT ENTER THE C.C.A.C. CAMPUS.
ADD HELICOPTER AVAILABILTY REGISTERING AND SCHEDULING AND THE SUMMIT IS HANDLED.
NOW, ANNOUNCE IMMED. THE CHANGE IN LOCATION TO GET THE OTHERS AWAY FROM THE CITY. MAKE THE NEW LOCATION WELL KNOWN. PREPARE THE PARK AS THOUGH YOU WERE PREPARING TO OPEN IT FOR A "WOODSTOCK" TYPE EVENT.
HAVE P.A.T. CREATE A TEMPORARY "G-20-BOYCE PARK" SHUTTLE BUS ROUTE THAT A HAS FREQUENT SCHEDULE THAT WILL GET THEM OUT OF THE CITY AS FAST AS THEY ARRIVE. THE SHUTTLE SHOULD BE AN EXPRESS RUN FROM OAKLAND CRAIG AND FORBES TO RT. 22 MONROEVILL MALL, MIRACLE MILE SHOPPING CENTER AND BOYCE PARK . PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF AT ALL 3 STOPS.
ORDER 100-300 "PORTABLE JOHNNIES" FOR BOYCE PARK - (AND PUT AT LEAST 20 IN POINT STATE PARK FOR INCREASED WANDERING TOURISM).
PREPARE A MEDIA STAGE, WITH ELECTRICAL ACCEPTABILITY, FOR "LOBBYIST ISSUE ORATION". GIVE THEM THE CHANCE TO SPEAK. GIVE THEM MEDIA PERSONNEL TO SPEAK TO. GIVE THEM A REASON TO STAY AWAY FROM THE CAMPUS, BUT STILL EXPLOIT THE EVENT ENOUGH TO SATISFY THEM.

CUT PAYROLL AND UTILIZE MILITARY PERSONNEL TO CONDUCT "FOOT PATROLS FOR SAFETY" 24 HRS. FOR THE 3 NIGHTS AND 2 DAYS OF THE EVENT. HAVE THEM SET UP TENTS AND OFFER RIDES TO PARK AREAS FOR ELDERLY AND DISABLED.
PROVIDE 2-3 UNMANNED FOOD PREP AND GATHERING TENTS, FOR USE BY VISITING GROUPS, TO BRING THEIR OWN SUPPLIES TO.
DIVIDE THE PARK INTO SECTIONS AND ASSIGN REGISTERED GROUPS TO SPECIFIC IDENTIFIED SECTIONS. THEY ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEAN-UP OF THEIR AREA.
THESE ARE THE MAJOR CONCERNS AND SUGGESTIONS I HAVE. THE MINOR ONES WILL FALL INTO PLACE, WITH AN APPROPRIATE ATTITUDE CHANGE TO "WELCOME, MAY WE BE OF ASSISTANCE ?".
PITTSBURGH COULD GO DOWN AS THE MODEL OF "PROPER CROWD HANDLING" WITH “NO VIOLENT OUT-BREAKS”, NO TRAFFIC INTERRUPTIONS, THE MOST SAFE AND SECURE ENVIRONMENTS FOR HONORABLE, LARGE GATHERINGS AND A DARN NICE PLACE TO VISIT OR RELOCATE TO ! ETC. ETC. ETC.
